标题: 图解什么是博士学位

转自http://matt.might.net/articles/phd-school-in-pictures/#licence。虽说观点没什么新鲜的，不过概括得不错，强调了拿到PhD后拥有的知识实际上是很局限的，不要忘记自然科学领域是很广阔的，要有全局观。如果只是在自己PhD期间一直搞的领域埋头拼命发文章到老，最后可能也就是变成圆球上的一根细毛，无关痛痒，可有可无。

Imagine a circle that contains all of human knowledge:

By the time you finish elementary school, you know a little:

By the time you finish high school, you know a bit more:

With a bachelor's degree, you gain a specialty:

A master's degree deepens that specialty:

Reading research papers takes you to the edge of human knowledge:

Once you're at the boundary, you focus:

You push at the boundary for a few years:

Until one day, the boundary gives way:

And, that dent you've made is called a Ph.D.:

Of course, the world looks different to you now:

So, don't forget the bigger picture:

Keep pushing.
