Research Area:
The pathology of Alzheimer’s disease is linked to interactions between various types of
assemblies of amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides (e.g., oligomers, channels and fibrils) and
neural cell membranes, which directly affect membrane integrity. In this project,
molecular dynamics (MD) simulations will be performed to unravel the details of the
molecular interactions between Aβ peptides and lipid membranes. The goal is to
understand the effect of membrane surfaces on the aggregation of Aβ. Aβ aggregation was
shown to be significantly accelerated by the presence of membranes, likely due to strong
electrostatic interactions between charged membranes and the Aβ peptide. To capture the
interaction of early Aβ oligomers with cellular membranes and the effect of the membrane
surface on the aggregation process, large-scale MD simulation of Aβ aggregation in the
presence of lipid bilayers will be performed and analyzed. This simulation study will
benefit from close collaborations with experimental groups.
A successful PhD thesis will be defended at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf.
