Our research group is looking for graduates or doctors to carry out a doctoral thesis or postdoctoral stay
through scholarships from their country or from Europe (example: “Marie Curie fellowships, EMBO
fellowships, CONACYT, etc”).
The work of the acceptor laboratory focuses on the study of glycosyltransferases/hydrolases involved in
human diseases. In our group we use X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM as the main tool, complemented
with enzymology, enzyme inhibition studies, etc., to study the molecular processes of enzymes involved in
the synthesis, modification and degradation of glycoconjugates, oligo and polysaccharides. We are also
interested in studying the reaction coordinates to elucidate the catalytic mechanism and thus develop new
strategies for the development of drugs for therapeutic purposes. We are currently working on projects as
diverse as the role of glycosyltransferases (GalNAc-Ts) in mucin glycosylation and their role in cancer and
other diseases, and the discovery of inhibitory compounds against essential glycosyltransferases of fungal
pathogens, and enteropathogens. In addition, we are also working with anti-Tn and anti-STn antibodies for
the treatment of various types of cancer, and nanobobodies as inhibitors of fungal cell wall
transglycosylases for the treatment of various invasive fungal infections such as aspergillosis, candidiasis
or cryptococcosis.

Those interested should email their CV and 2-3 letters of recommendation (1 of them from their thesis
supervisor in the case of postdoctoral fellows) to Dr. Ramón Hurtado-Guerrero (rhurtado@bifi.es) in the
department of biophysics of the BIFI (http://www.bifi.es), University of Zaragoza
